CASSA Annual General Meeting – July 2017

The team at the CASSA 2017 AGM

Five members of our Kidney Health Education and Research Group attended the 2017 AGM of the Council of Agencies Serving South Asians, held July 21, 2017 at the Scarborough Civic Centre. This meeting was an occasion for CASSA’s member agencies to come together to do some networking, review highlights of the past year’s activities, and elect board members. Keynote speakers for the day were Zaib Shaikh, Film Commissioner and Director of Entertainment Industries for the City of Toronto, and Samina Talat, Senior Director of Community Health and Wellness at Canadian Red Cross.

Our researchers Dr. Istvan Mucsi, Aarushi Bansal, Abeera Ali, Navneet Singh and Vardaan Gupta had the pleasure of meeting several individuals whose work aims to address the health needs of South Asian community members and to reduce their barriers to accessing timely, appropriate healthcare. CASSA’s Annual Health Equity Summit and its ongoing South Asian Gift of Life campaign (in partnership with Trillium Gift of Life Network) are just a couple of examples of the work this organization is doing to promote equitable health outcomes among Canadians of South Asian ethnicity. Our group appreciated this opportunity to meet with members of various South Asian communities, learn about the priorities of CASSA’s member agencies, and lay the groundwork for potential future partnerships related to our research on ethnocultural barriers to living kidney donation and modifying such barriers through timely, culturally appropriate patient education.
