Explore Transplant Ontario (ETO) – Provincial implementation

The provincial Explore Transplant Ontario (ETO) project is a province-wide quality initiative led by Dr. Amit Garg and co-led by Drs. Novak and Mucsi. The ETO pilot study, conducted at Toronto General Hospital and Humber River Hospital, demonstrated that a targeted transplant education package for patients with advanced kidney disease significantly increased patients’ knowledge of kidney transplantation options and their ability to make informed treatment decisions.

The ETO transplant education toolkit consists of print materials informing patients and their families about transplant, as well as a series of compelling educational videos featuring kidney transplant recipients, living kidney donors, and nephrologists.

Explore Transplant Ontario will be an important component of the educational materials introduced in the province-wide Access to Kidney Transplantation (AKT) initiative, organized by the Ontario Renal Network and the Trillium Gift of Life Network. As part of this multifaceted initiative, a special focus will be placed on delivering culturally competent information to reduce barriers to kidney transplantation and to safely increase living donor kidney transplantation in Ontario. The Explore Transplant Ontario package and other educational materials will be introduced to the province’s renal programs as part of a two-phase, staggered trial.

As of October 2017, the first 13 of Ontario’s 26 regional renal care programs have begun to receive this education portfolio, and the remaining 13 centres will be added in 2019. This staggered delivery will enable us to better measure the impact of this enhanced education on transplant referral and evaluation rates in Ontario.

Recent Activity:
